Jim Dine paintings are powerful and overflowing with energy, layered in many different types of paints, all combined to produce complex surfaces. They come alive with glossy drips, matte spatters, and vivid colorful brushstrokes. Dine paints his iconic themes Hearts, Tools, Venus and Robes with a mastery of colors and textures. He presents us with infinite possibilities from which to appreciate these beloved subjects. Dine paintings are styled with an interplay of bold lines and vibrant color. From watery thin to thick enveloping brushstrokes, Jim Dine paintings convey a deep emotional complexity.
In Jim Dine’s paintings the artist’s process of exploration and reinvention, and use of iconic images have become the artist’s signature. Dine celebrates the process- the brushstroke, the handmade and the granular. Jim Dine paintings are innovative and often combine the painted canvas with ordinary objects of daily life. The artist finds inspiration in his memories and paints with objects with which he finds connection. In his iconically themed heart paintings he uses acrylic, sand, charcoal and hand held tools. In recent years the artist has produced large scale paintings embodying abstraction and movement. In addition to painting, Dine’s mastery extends to printmaking, drawing, assemblages, woodcuts and sculpture.
